If you cast a line with a hook and there is no bait, chances are you will not catch a fish. So how do you find bait?
There are several ways but the easiest is two sticks to cause a disturbance in the soil. Here is how and what you can do find some earthworms.
- Find two sticks that are about an inch (2.5cm) around
- On one stick, remove the bark on one side and create a few shallow notches about a quarter inch (6mm) apart
- Now dig a little bit in the ground to loosen up the top layer
- Place the stick with the notches in the dirt about a half inch
- Put it at a slight angle with the notches facing up
- Now take the other stick and rub it up and down against the notches (should make a stutter sound)
- After doing this for a minute or so, you should see earthworms come to the surface
- Grab them to eat yourself (boil them first) or use it as bait for fishing
This sounds like some wizardry, but what it does is causes the earthworms to feel the vibration of a prey (like moles) digging in the ground to eat them, so they move up to the surface. Try it in the forest on your next hike and see how it works for you. It worked for me when I needed to find bait to catch fish by a river.
