Do you carry a GPS and a compass with map when you hike?

Absolutely!  GPS can fail, or if you take a bad fall it can break.  Same with a compass, but I have my compass in a padded pouch as well as a map in a waterproof map holder.  I set the declination offset on my compass prior to going on the hike, and I have a map scaled for my compass.  Of course, I can navigate without a compass using an analog watch or even a shadow, but I like to keep it simple.  Also check out:  Can you use the phone GPS to navigate without internet or cell service.
