I have lived on a boat, overlanding (before the term got popular), and have gone car camping, glamping, and backpacking in many places around the globe. When you have the luxuries of carrying a ton of stuff to prepare and cook food, it feels like home to me. However, if space and weight is a concern (carrying a kitchen full of stuff is not an option in a survival situation), I have a short list of items I carry or make on my own.
There are many options out there where you can buy a kitchen in a bag that has many of the items I use or carry, but I have yet to see one that I can rely on and use for the long term. I have purchased a few, and it all lasted me one outing.
If there are any manufacturers out there that make these kits that I can test out, contact me and send it my way. I will write a full review after use as to how well the product set is, and the longevity of the products in actual use, as well as whether people should buy it or not.
I personally would build your own kitchen kit. Here are the items I have with comments:
- Cutting board (I usually can make one of these so I don’t carry one all the time, but it is nice to have)
- Knife (this one is important – some kits have multiple, I really only need one)
- Spatula (this one I use quite often)
- Spoon (large one for cooking, I have made these as well so I don’t carry one all the time)
- Salt and pepper (I use this for foods I know that need it)
- Tongs (I use this almost as much as my spatula)
- Can/Bottle opener
For personal eating utensils, here are the items I carry (you can click on the links to buy what I have below):
- Collapsible bowl
- Collapsible plate (I have made plates out of wood, nothing fancy)
- Collapsible cup (I use this for hot cereal)
- Titanium cup (AFFILIATE LINK) (I use this for hot beverages like coffee and tea)
- Fork, Spoon, Knife (AFFILIATE LINK)
- Chopsticks (AFFILIATE LINK) (I can usually make these, but I like my titanium set)
I have had other items, but these will be the bare necessities I want to carry. Everything above I can carry in a couple of pouches that take up very little room. Let me know if you have a more optimal set.
