Watch a few episodes of Naked and Afraid, and you’ll see people covered in bug bites, and tons of mosquitoes and ants and other bugs that attack them. There are ways to minimize this, but not all locations will have the necessary items to keep you from getting devoured by bugs. So, what can you do?
Now that you have a small survival community in place with the essentials of fire, water, shelter and food, what are some tasks that need to be done daily in order to continue to survive? Here is a short list.
This can be trickier than people think. They see people do it on TV shows like Naked and Afraid and think that they can do it. The key to starting a fire with a ferro rod is dry tinder and small dry twigs, and dry larger branches. Also, air as the flint ignites the tinder is critical. If your fire starting kit has magnesium on it, it makes it a bit easier, but not necessarily easy.
People think I am crazy, but if I have a soda can, some chocolate, and a rag or even a T-shirt, I can start a fire. The can should be made of aluminum and the bottom should be aluminum and not coated with paint or a plastic overlay. In a nutshell, this is a way to build a parabolic fire starter.
People ask me, “Why do you carry a magnifying glass in your wallet? Are you that old you can’t read the menu or the phone?” Funny. I carry it for only one reason, starting a fire in an emergency when I have nothing else like a lighter or ferro rod (this is super rare as I carry a tiny ferro rod in my wallet).
I have done this in a pinch, where I happened to have a device with a 9V battery, and I had some steel wool handy in a bag for cleaning off my knife. You will need a working 9V battery and some steel wool.
Just because you have a lighter, it doesn’t mean you can build a proper fire quickly. Notice I didn’t say matches as I am not a fan of them. Here are steps and techniques I have used to start a camp fire fast.
