When I first purchased a few of these, I had a specific use for these. I haven’t had a need for it, until recently, when I went sport climbing at a local crag. The area is very noisy with traffic, and shouting out “Slack!” or “Take!” would be futile. So I brought these radios.

It was great to be able to give a status update of what was going on when I led the climb and was building the top rope anchor. I can communicate with my lead belayer every step I was taking including any commands that I usually shout from over 50 feet. I was very happy with the result.

You can get them as ABBREE AR63 or Jianpai G63. So why did I buy these radios other than for climbing?

Here are some features:

  • 400-480MHz – I set these for GMRS/FRS channels (low power) so my friend and I can communicate while rock climbing using an FRS channel
  • Repeater capable for both GMRS or HAM
  • Frequency Copy – Be able to copy a frequency and codes from another radio
  • 16 memory channels
  • USB C charging
  • 69 x 55 x 40mm – Very small and lightweight, I attached a carabiner to it so I can wear it around my neck as a climber or a belayer
  • Programmable with CHIRP or an app from Jianpai
  • Fairly rugged as I had this attached around my neck and it banged around when I was climbing the rock face

My package came with the radio, a short antenna, a desktop charge, a belt clip, and a lanyard. The short antenna works fine for short distance and I did try with a longer antenna and got decent distance of over 1 mile in a dense metropolitan area. This package did not come with a USB C charging cable, and you need to use a USB A to USB C charging cable for the charging to work.

Take a look and you can buy them here:
