People think I am crazy, but if I have a soda can, some chocolate, and a rag or even a T-shirt, I can start a fire. The can should be made of aluminum and the bottom should be aluminum and not coated with paint or a plastic overlay. In a nutshell, this is a way to build a parabolic fire starter. If you want to buy one instead of making one, you can buy it here: Parabolic Fire Starter (AFFILIATE LINK).
Here are the steps:
- Take the can and put it upside down.
- Take a rag or a T-shirt and put some chocolate on it.
- Begin polishing the bottom divot of the can.
- Continue until you have a mirror finish.
- Face the bottom of the can towards the sun (DO NOT LOOK INTO THE BOTTOM).
- Take a small part of the tinder bundle and begin moving it towards the bottom of the can until you see a small, very bright beam on it (DO NOT OBSTRUCT THE CAN FROM THE SUN)
- Leave the tinder bundle there until it ignites and give it some air by blowing into the tinder bundle.
- Put it down and place some twigs and continue providing air until the flame gets larger.
- Add the larger sticks and logs until the fire is steady.
