I recently ordered the Baofeng BF-F8HP Pro without much expectations, except it is similar to the Baofeng UV-17 Pro GPS, but the firmware is upgradeable (unlike the hacks available for the UV-17 Pro GPS).
When I first purchased a few of these, I had a specific use for these. I haven’t had a need for it, until recently, when I went sport climbing at a local crag. The area is very noisy with traffic, and shouting out “Slack!” or “Take!” would be futile.
I recently ordered the Baofeng UV-17 Pro GPS without any expectations. It cost me under $50 with international shipping. It is a multi-band radio but supposed to work on 2m and 70cm (as well as 1.25m) bands. It has air band and GPS. My quick summary is that this is the best Baofeng I ever purchased.
People think that CB radio is dead, but in fact it is still very well used by truckers and people on the road a lot like RVers. With GMRS usage picking up and repeaters throughout the country, you would think most have moved off CB radios.
The short answer for this is GMRS. That answer would have been different 15 years ago. It is the fastest way to have communication devices that the entire family or household can use. All it takes is getting an FCC license by completing a form and paying $35 for a 10 year term. The radio selection is key here, and the more you spend, the better the quality. You want high quality as opposed to something you can buy at a local superstore.
This question is often asked of me but simply put, ham radio requires passing an exam in order to obtain a license, and GMRS does not require passing an exam.
